The current Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim's Trevor Nunn-helmed A Little Night Music, which began previews on November 24 2010, has been infused with some major star power: two-time Tony Award winner Bernadette Peters, taking over for newly minted Tony-winner Catherine Zeta-Jones, and fellow Tony-toter cum general Broadway legend Elaine Stritch, who replaces pal and fellow stage icon Angela Lansbury. Night Music, which had originally been scheduled to end its engagement on June 20, 2010, will see its new stars shine beginning July 13 at the Walter Kerr Theatre, marking the first time Peters and Stritch have shared the stage in the same Broadway production. (Lucky ticket-holders may remember catching both, decked out in red, on the Avery Fisher Hall stage for Sondheim: The Birthday Concert in March 2010.)
Peters and Stritch met up for a quick chat with the press on March 24, going over everything from how they got the roles (Sondheim suggested the run to Peters during a random phone call about other matters) to their love of the currently running classic (though Stritch, in what she deemed a "luck of the Irish moment," lamented missing Zeta-Jones's performance; the leading lady was out of the show the night she attended.) So, what can audiences expect when Sondheim stalwarts Peters and Stritch take the stage as mother-daughter duo Desiree and Madame Armfeldt? To quote Stritch: "It's going to be something."
